How to Keep Birds Out of Your Vents

Birds are capable of wrecking havoc by living in or around your house's vents. They may block airflow or destroy the vent entirely. This provides a significant safety hazard and impedes proper cooling and heating. A preemptive strategy is vital.

  • Find a way to reach your vents either with a ladder or a stable stepping stool.

  • Wait until the baby birds leave the nest to remove it. If you remove the nest prematurely the baby birds may die. It only takes approximately 11 to 15 days for baby birds to leave the nest.

  • Open the vent then use a wire hanger to remove the nest.

  • Push the rest of the nest out using a pole or a hose.

  • Vacuum all around where the nest was to entirely remove it.

  • Clean around where the nest was using an old cloth and a bucket of soap. The bacteria from the nest may be dangerous so use gloves.

  • Check the vent daily to make sure the birds don't start rebuilding a nest.
