How to Remove the Exhaust Manifold on a 4.6 Liter

The 4.6l engine found in many Ford vehicles has a pair of exhaust manifolds that guide the gasses created by the internal combustion process to the exhaust tip where it enters the atmosphere. Because of their location on the engine, they need to be removed for some service procedures to be performed on the vehicle. If you need to take off the exhaust manifolds on your 4.6l engine, then it can be done in just under an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

Instructions

    • 1

Pop the hood and allow the engine to cool down enough that you can touch the exhaust manifolds without burning your hands.

    • 2

Unbolt the EGR valve tube running to the right hand manifold using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Unbolt the oil dipstick tube on the left side exhaust manifold from the engine. Use the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

    • 3

Unplug the wiring to the oxygen sensor on the manifolds. This can be done manually. Unbolt the exhaust manifolds from the catalytic converter tubing that flows to the rest of the exhaust. Use the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets.

    • 4

Unbolt the exhaust manifolds from the engine heads with both the ratchet and an open-end wrench. Slide one manifold off of the studs with your hands and put it to the side. Do the same with the remaining manifold.
