How to Clean Murky Pool Water

Murky pool water is commonly caused by algae.

A pool requires a lot of maintenance to keep the water clean and clear. Good water chemical balance will prevent the pool from growing algae, which can make the pool water cloudy. Excessive chemicals might also cause cloudy water. If algae is growing you may notice skin irritation after swimming in the pool. Adjusting the pool chemical balance will usually clear up any cloudy water issues and prevent sickness after swimming in the pool.

Things You'll Need

• Pool pH tester
• Clarifier

Instructions

1. Take a sample from your pool at a depth of an arm's length in a clean bottle from your pH testing kit. Apply the supplied chemicals in your pool testing kit into the water to test the pH, chlorine levels and total alkalinity. Chlorine should be 1 to 3 parts per million (ppm), alkalinity around 120 ppm and the pH between 7.2 and 7.6. Adjust the levels as necessary.

2. Backwash your pool filter according to your pool pump instructions. This usually requires switching the water flow at the pool pump.

3. Run the pool filter system for 24 to 48 hours to remove debris from the water.

4. Apply a water clarifier to the pool water according to the instructions on the label. Pool clarifier is available at all swimming pool centers. Run the filter for 12 to 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings

• Let your pool settle for eight hours after applying chemicals to the pool before trying to fix cloudy water. Cloudy water issues may be the chemicals settling in the pool.
