How to Install Panel Moulding

Homeowners love the look of wainscoting paneling. This paneling can be difficult and expensive to install. Instead, many homeowners use moulding to create the look of wainscoting panels without the cost. Cutting and shaping the moulding into wall frames mimics the look of more expensive wood panels. Before creating the panel frames from moulding, chair rail molding needs to be installed in the room. When the molding and wall are painted the same color, the bottom portion of the wall will look as if it is made from solid wood panels. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the perimeter of the room with a measuring tape.

    • 2

Transfer the measurements to the chair rail moulding with a pencil.

    • 3

Cut the chair rail moulding to size on the miter saw. Set the miter saw to a 45-degree angle to make the corner cuts.

    • 4

Decide how high the chair rail molding needs to be installed. Most homes have chair rail molding installed somewhere between 32 and 36 inches high.

    • 5

Set the chair rail molding in place on the wall and secure it with a nail gun.

    • 6

Determine the layout for the wall frames. The frames should maintain an equal distance between each other, the chair rail, and the baseboard molding.

    • 7

Use the frame layout to measure and cut the small panel moulding to size on the miter saw. Set the saw to a 45-degree angle to make the corner cuts in the moulding.

    • 8

Hold the frame moulding pieces against the wall and nail them in place with a nail gun. Repeat until each of the frames has been secured to the wall.

    • 9

Fill the nail holes with wood putty. Caulk gaps between the molding and wall with caulk. Let the caulk and putty dry overnight.

    • 10

      Paint the moulding as desired.
