How to Make a Homemade Photo Ornament Ball

Create personalized holiday and special event decorations using copies of your favorite photos and glass ornament balls. These homemade designs make distinctive grandparent gifts; they are so inexpensive to make that you can create one each year to document the growth of your children. Another use for homemade photo ornament balls is to decorate a tree centerpiece at an engagement party or a wedding reception. Select candid photos of the happy couple to make the ornament balls.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a photo to fit on one side of a glass ornament ball with decorative-edged scissors. If the ornament ball is large enough, cut two photos, one for each side. Clear ornament balls are available in craft stores, but you can use any color that coordinates with the photo.

    • 2

Cover the section of the glass ornament ball where you plan to place the photo with a thin layer of decoupage glue. A paint sponge is the best choice for applying the glue; paint brushes can leave bristles behind.

    • 3

Press the photo onto the glued section. Smooth the displaced glue over the top of the photo with a paint sponge. Allow the glue to dry. Cover the photo with another layer of decoupage glue. Let it dry completely. The glue will create a glossy or semi-gloss sheen over the photo.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to add a second photo onto the opposite side of the ornament ball.

    • 5

Outline the edge of the photo with a paint pen that complements the ornament ball and the photo. The paint pen will camouflage the shiny ring of dried decoupage glue that may be on the glass ball around the perimeter of the photo. The painted outline will also highlight the photo.

Sprinkle glitter into the wet paint for additional embellishment. You can also sprinkle glitter into the decoupage glue edging around the picture before it dries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Instead of glitter or paint, glue small glass beads around the photos as a frame.
