How to Make a Wooden Mouse Trap Car

Mouse trap cars are powered by energy stored in the trap's spring through a coiled string. It is not unusual for them to be constructed for science classes, particularly physics, to demonstrate different forces that exist in nature. Though mouse trap cars can be constructed a number of different ways, most use the same concept of operation. After making a first car, use the method of propulsion to experiment with new designs. Even the smallest change in the car's parts or construction will create a different result.

Things You'll Need

  • Wooden mouse trap
  • Four eye hooks
  • Two rods that fit in the eye hooks
  • Four washers
  • Four wheels
  • String
  • Glue

Instructions

  1. Mouse Trap Car

    • 1

Fasten two eye hooks to the front of the mouse trap's base and two to the back. Each should be positioned about 8 mm from the edge of the trap. Be sure the eye hooks are aligned.

    • 2

Measure the rods so they are equal in size. Each should be approximately 15 mm longer than the trap's width to prevent friction from occurring.

    • 3

Position the rods, the car's axles, into the eye hooks. Make sure they are parallel.

    • 4

Place rubber washers at the end of the rods to prevent them from sliding out. Leave a tiny amount of room between the washer and the hook so the axle can move.

    • 5

Put the wheels on the axle. If they are not secure, use glue to attach them so they will not fall off.

    • 6

Tie one end of the string to the center of the trap's jaw, the part that catches the mouse. Wind the string's other end to the car's back axle in the opposite direction of the car's projected direction. Wind it tight enough to lift the jaw.

    • 7

Set the car down and release any hold on the rear axle that was keeping the string in place. Watch the car travel.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wheels can be purchased from craft stores or hand crafted out of a number of materials like plywood, circular lids or compact discs. For better traction, rubber bands or balloon pieces can be glued to the wheels. Cars can be painted and decorated.

  • Prior to construction, remove the wire that holds the trap open and any staples to prevent accidental injury. Also remove the bait holder as it is not needed.
