How to Airbrush Cupcakes
Cupcake decorating takes multiple forms. Decorators can go simple, using plain frosting and colored icing. They can be very decorative, using fondant and airbrushing to create professional-looking designs. Airbrushing is a technique that allows decorators to create scenes on cakes and cupcakes using multiple colors of liquid paint and the layering of colors to create a watercolor paint look. Purchase an airbrush and edible paints. The airbrush works by steam blowing through a trigger on the brush dispersing the paint. Determine what the cupcake design will look like by drawing it out on paper. Color it in to ensure what you put on the cupcake will be the same. Stencils may be used to produce a cleaner image on the cupcake.

Add edible paint to the airbrush system. Gently press the trigger and apply a thin layer of paint on top of the cupcake icing. When changing paint colors, clean the airbrush nozzle and piping equipment thoroughly.

Apply additional colors to the cupcake icing. Add additional decorations such as candles, candies or piped icing to enhance the cupcake.

Tips & Warnings
It is helpful to draw out the cupcake design before beginning. Stores that sell baking equipment may also sell stencils, which can be used to make a cleaner design. When first learning to airbrush, it is a good idea to test your airbrush technique on a paper towel or piece of paper before beginning on the cupcakes.
Be sure to clean all the pieces of the airbrush system in between colors and after use.
