How to Renew Your Journeyman Electrician License
Becoming an electrician requires significant hands-on training and education, but the journey does not end when you obtain your journeyman's license. Licenses are only issued for a certain period of time, after which they must be renewed. Most states have a list of requirements that need to be fulfilled before your can renew your journeyman's license. These requirements usually entail some type of continuing education requirement in addition to paying state licensing fees.

Visit the website of your state's licensing board. The simplest way to find your state's licensing authority is to conduct an Internet search with the name of your state and the phrase "electrician licensing." Follow the links to the appropriate department for your state. For instance, Texas journeyman electricians will renew their licenses through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, while Maine journeymen will renew through the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation's Office of Licensing and Regulation.

Pay the appropriate licensing and application fees. Some states will require a processing fee for submitting the application, along with a fee for the license itself. Maine, for example, requires a $25 application fee and a $150 licensing fee as of 2010.

Ensure that you have met the continuing education requirements of your state before your submit your renewal application. Each state has its own set of continuing education requirements, so you may need to search through several of the links provided by the licensing department's website to find the information regarding continuing education requirements. In most cases, the number of hours needed to have your licensed renewed is fairly minimal. For instance, Maine requires 15 hours of continuing education, Colorado requires the completion of 24, while Montana and New Mexico both require 16.

Submit your application either online or in paper form, whichever is required by your state's electrical licensing authority. For the states of Texas and Maine, for example, you can simply renew your license online by submitting your journeyman electrician license number and the last four digits of your Social Security number. Be prepared to provide proof of meeting the continuing education requirements. You will need the name, address, phone number and possibly some other identification number given by your education provider to prove the completion of the necessary requirements.
