How to Acquire an Oregon Limited Journeyman Manufacturing Plant Electrician's License
According to the Oregon Employment Department, there were over 1,100 licensed manufacturing plant electricians working in the state of Oregon in 2010. Of this number, over 600 were employed in the wood and paper products industries. To acquire a manufacturing plant electrician's license in Oregon, you must complete a four-year apprenticeship program that includes classroom training. You must also pass a written exam.

Complete an approved apprenticeship program. Electrical apprenticeships provide on-the-job training and classroom instruction (see Resources). Apprentices generally begin at half the salary of a licensed electrician, with opportunities for pay raises as experience increases. Under Oregon law, you must complete at least four years as an electrical apprentice before you can successfully apply for a license.

Complete an Electrical Experience Verification form. This requires you to document at least four years (8,000 hours) of qualifying experience. This experience must include at least 1,000 hours experience in electrical circuits installation and power distribution, respectively, and at least 500 hours experience in motors and generators, and troubleshooting, respectively (see Resources).

Acquire documentation proving that you have completed high school.

Acquire documentation proving that you have completed an approved apprenticeship program. You are required to include transcripts showing that you successfully passed all required training courses Your apprenticeship program will provide you with these documents.

Acquire a passport-style photo of yourself. Write your name on the back.

Choose a convenient testing location. Test sites are located across the state of Oregon (see Resources). You must include your chosen site on the license application.

Complete an Electrical License Application. Submit your application, supporting documents and fees to the Oregon Department of Consumer & Business Services (see Resources). If your application is accepted, you will receive a letter of authorization to sit for the licensing exam.

Register for an exam date according to the procedures set out in the letter of authorization. You must sit for the exam within 60 days of receiving authorization. If you pass the exam, a license will be issued and a photo identification card will be mailed to you.

Tips & Warnings
The Limited Journeyman Manufacturing Plant license does not authorize the holder to do any electrical work outside of the industrial plant owned by his employer.
