How to Cook Kettle Popcorn on the Stove

Kettle popcorn, also know as kettle corn, is a salty and sweet treat that is found at street fairs, circuses and carnivals. If none of those events happen to be in the neighborhood, you could possibly find it packaged at a specialty grocer or even in a microwaveable form at the supermarket. Though, instead of settling for second-rate or stale kettle popcorn, you can cook it on the stove at home. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
  • Large pot with handles and lid
  • Ladle or wooden spoon
  • Large bowl

Instructions

      Turn on the stove burner to medium-high. Place the pot on the burner and pour the vegetable oil in, letting it heat.

      Place 3 to 5 kernels into the pot and wait for them to pop, and then pour the sugar and kernels into the pot, stirring it quickly with the ladle or spoon. Secure the lid on the pot.

      Wait until the popping begins. Pick the pot up by the handles and shake it every 3 to 4 seconds. Continue this until the kernels stop popping, which should be from 2 1/2 to 4 minutes.

      Remove the pot from the burner and pour the popcorn immediately into the bowl. Sprinkle the salt onto the popcorn.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not leave the popcorn in the hot pot; it will burn.
