1
Sign up for a mystery quilt project or find a magazine releasing mystery quilt instructions in installments.
-
2
Gather materials for the quilt. Mystery quilts instructions will generally include basic items, such as fat quarters, fabric scraps, batting material, quilting thread and more. Good places to find these items are fabric or craft stores.

3
Read the first installment of the mystery quilt project. It should indicate what size the quilt will be and how many blocks will be needed for the quilt top. The instructions will further indicate how many and what type of quilting blocks to sew. A mystery quilt top requires that the blocks be sewn first, according to number and type.
-
4
Pick fabrics for the quilt. Mystery quilt projects will describe block colors as being; whites, medium grays, dark grays, blacks and yellows. Every mystery quilt pattern will be different, but there will be a set of color instructions to help quilters in picking appropriate fabrics for the quilt.

5
Sew the blocks following the mystery quilt instructions. There are several styles of blocks. Most mystery quilt patterns will make use of commonly known block patterns, such as; Poinsettia, Pinwheel or Log Cabin. Those suggesting lesser-known styles may provide a sample image and instructions on constructing the block.
-
6
Wait for the next installment of the mystery quilt pattern, which will include the instructions for assembling the quilt top or show pictures of the final product. Instructions for assembling the quilt typically list rows of blocks by number and type.
-
7
Complete the rest of the quilt once the top is revealed. This includes sandwiching the batting between the top and the backing, sewing and tying the top and bottom together, and finishing it off with quilt binding.
