How to Heat With Hot Water Boilers

How to Heat With Hot Water Boilers thumbnail
Heat your home with a hot water boiler.

Hot water boilers have been in use for years as a means of heating a building. A heating boiler is different from a furnace in that the furnace pushes hot air through vents, while a boiler heats water and pushes it through baseboard heaters or wall convectors, cycling the cold water back into the tank where it can be heated and then circulated through the house again. Otherwise known as hydronic heating systems, they utilize either electric or oil-fired heaters for the water, and can push the water through your home in a variety of ways. Does this Spark an idea?

Decide if you want to utilize gravity hot water based systems, a baseboard system or a forced circulation system. Each has different ways of delivering the hot water to your home. Gravity systems rely upon gravity and the interaction of hot and cold water to cycle, and usually utilize radiators placed on the walls. Baseboard systems are similar, using baseboards around the room set on the floor where the heat will rise, while forced circulation systems use pumps to keep the hot water flowing through the pipes.

Place your heating units in strategic locations. Baseboards should always be run around the floor of a room where the heat can rise and thus force circulation of the hot/cold air in a home. Radiators should always be installed underneath windows where they can neutralize any cold air that may leak in. Mobile units (radiators on wheels that have their own water and oil inside that is heated by an electrical coil) can be moved as you see fit, and used in temporary situations.

Choose the type of boiler that suits your needs. All hot water heating systems rely upon a boiler, but they all utilize fuels to heat, ranging from gas, oil, coal, solar energy and electricity. Each have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, some of which will depend upon your budget as well as the availability of fuel and your views on sustainable forms of energy.

Provide regular maintenance for your hot water heating system. Every year the air vent valves must be opened to let any trapped air out of the system, since it rises through the pipes to the highest radiators/baseboards in the home. In addition, the water in the pipes needs to be drained and replaced annually to keep mineral build up from restricting the flow of water through the pipes.
