How to Create Collapsible Boxes

How to Create Collapsible Boxes thumbnail
Make collapsible boxes for easy storage.

When you need to store small items or add a decorative touch to any room, boxes are a convenient item to have around. However, if you don't have a need for the box right now, it can be bulky to just sit around. You can create your own collapsible boxes, however, to take out and store items whenever you need them and fold away when you don't.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 fabric squares,10-by-10-inch
  • 5 quilt batting squares, 9.75-by-9.75-inch
  • 5 cardboard sheets, 9.75-by-9.75-inch
  • 4 ribbon strips, 6 inches long

Instructions

    • 1

Sew together two squares of fabric inside out, only sewing three of the edges. Fold the square right side out so the seam is on the inside. Slip one sheet of quilt batting and cardboard in the pocket of the fabric square. Repeat this step so you have five fabric square pockets with one sheet of batting and cardboard in each.

    • 2

Pick one of the fabric squares to be the bottom of the box. Sew the open side of this square so it's completely shut. Lay the bottom square on your workspace.

    • 3

Lay out the four remaining squares around the bottom square to make a plus sign. Position the four squares so the open edges are next to the edges of the bottom square. Sew the open edge to the edge of the bottom square, attaching the two edges and closing the open edge.

    • 4

Cut a small slit through the corners of the plus shape. Make sure only to cut through the fabric and not the batting and cardboard inside.

    • 5

Lift the sides of the box up so they're standing. Slip ribbon through the slits and tie down, attaching each of the four upper corners of the fabric box. Untie the ribbon and fold the sides down to collapse the box flat.
