How to Make a Ribbon Sash for Your School
Most schools use ribbon sashes to designate Homecoming Court, Homecoming King and Queen, and Prom King and Queen. Your school may also need sashes for plays or musicals. Although you can purchase pre-made sashes from a variety of places, you will save a lot of money by making them yourself. All you really need to make a sash is a long piece of ribbon that is at least 3 inches wide.
Things You'll Need
- 2 feet (at least) of satin ribbon, 3 inches wide
- Straight pin
- Needle
- Thread
- Iron-on lettering (optional)
- Iron (optional)
Instructions

1
Place the middle of a 3-inch-wide piece of ribbon over a friend's right shoulder, draping over the front and back.
-
2
Sweep both sides of the ribbon over to the left side of your friend's body, ending at the left hip.
-
-
3
Crisscross the sash tails, crossing the right tail over the left, and insert a straight pin to keep the tails crossed.
-
4
Thread your needle with a thread the same color as the sash. Tie a tight knot at the end of the thread.
-
5
Insert the needle through the back of the sash where the straight pin is located.
-
6
Sew a 1/2-inch stitch through the two tails to keep them together.
-
7
Place some iron-on lettering onto the sash, if desired. Align the letters so they are written across the chest of the person who will wear the sash. Iron the letters on gently. Be careful not to turn the iron on too hot, or to leave it on the lettering too long, as this can damage the ribbon.
