How to Make a New Mommy Towel Cake

Make a baby shower "cake" with rolled baby bath towels.

Baby showers are traditional celebrations of a woman's pregnancy and opportunities for friends and family to help the parents prepare for a new baby. Food, games and gifts for mom and baby are all part of the festivities. A fun, easy-to-make and useful item for a baby shower is a towel cake. Roll baby bath towels and wash cloths into a cake form as a buffet table centerpiece that doubles as a gift for the mommy-to-be.

Things You'll Need

• 2 full-size baby bath towels
• 2 smaller baby bath towels
• 2 baby wash cloths
• Colorful ribbon
• Safety pins
• Cake stand or round cake plate
• Decorations of choice

Instructions

1. Build the bottom layer of the towel cake with the full-size baby bath towels. Fold each in half along the long side and place one on top of the other. Roll tightly from one end to the other and secure with a safety pin in the middle. Tie a ribbon around the middle of the roll to cover the safety pin or pin a decorative bow over it.

2. Build the middle layer of the towel cake with the smaller baby bath towels. Fold the towels and roll them the same way as the bottom layer of the cake, pinning the roll and adding a ribbon. Place this layer on top of the bottom layer, arranging it in the center.

3. Build the top layer of the towel cake the same way as the first two layers, and put it on top of the middle layer.

4. Use a fancy glass footed cake stand or a large, round cake plate to stage the towel cake.

5. Decorate the cake with ribbons, artificial flowers, baby bath items such as small sample size soaps, shampoos, body washes, lotions, sponges, or rubber bath toys. Pin the items to the towel layers with safety pins or hot glue them to wooden skewers stuck into the towel rolls.

6. Affix a cake topper to the top middle of the cake. Use a bath toy, a sign that says "bath time," a wash cloth folded accordion-style and tied in the middle to resemble a flower, a plastic baby shower cake topper from a bakery, a new mommy how-to book about bathing babies or a small stuffed animal.

Tips & Warnings

• Create your towel cake with shower colors, blue for a boy or pink for a girl, or with towels that match the baby's nursery room theme if you know it.

• Let other guests of the baby shower know you are making a towel cake so they don't bring towels and wash cloths as their gifts.

• If you want to place more than six gift items in the cake, double the number of towels in the layers.
