How to Make a Whoville Costume

How to Make a Whoville Costume thumbnail
White feather boas are useful in creating a Whoville costume.

Theodor Seuss Geisel -- Dr. Seuss -- wrote a classic book, "Horton Hears a Who!" It features people who live in the land of Whoville. Years later, these characters appeared again in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Re-creating the costumes of these whimsical characters is not a difficult task. They are perfect for Halloween, masquerade costumes or even amusing Christmas plays. These costumes are inexpensive to make since the characters are usually depicted with little clothing. Using clothing you already own with wacky patterns and off-beat colors enhances the costume well.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Dress the person in matching solid-color pants and tops, such as a sweatsuit or other nondescript clothing.

    • 2

Wrap the feather boa around the neck of any female who will be wearing the Whoville costume.

    • 3

Cut the feather boa so that it fits closely to the neckline, but not tightly.

    • 4

Fasten the feather boa or white fur around the neck area with a twist tie connecting both ends.

    • 5

Place a wide, colorful men's necktie around the neck of any male wearing a Whoville costume. You can also cut out triangles from construction paper to make a large collar for the males.

    • 6

Measure the female's forehead and add an inch to the measurement. Cut a strip of felt fabric or construction paper in the correct length to form a headband around the person's forehead. Glue it together with a hot glue gun.

    • 7

Add a whimsical, large silk or plastic flower to the back of the headband with hot glue. Make sure it will stand in an upright, vertical position when the headband is on the head. Female citizens of Whoville often wear these types of flowers to distinguish them from the males.

    • 8

Slide some colorful, wacky knee socks onto your feet. Large polka dots, multicolored stripes or even funky, neon designs work well with the Whoville costume.

    • 9

Wear a jacket that has a plaid, polka dot or other wacky design.

    • 10

Glue feathers boas onto a skirt for a female Who or make a simple circle skirt out of a furry fabric.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a solid-colored jacket at a thrift store or from a garage sale. Cut out large polka dots from felt fabric and glue them onto the jacket. This zany look works well for Whoville costumes.

  • Use hair paint to highlight your hair with neon or pastel colors. Males can use gel to spike their hair and color the tips. Females can create a zany look by wearing oddly placed braids or pony tails.

  • Females with long hair can pull their hair up into a pony tail on the top of their heads, insert an empty water bottle into the rubber band holding the hair and then spread the hair around it. Secure the ends of your hair with another rubber band. This creates an unusual Whoville effect.
