How to Make Boxes for Individual Pieces of Wedding Cake
After a lavishly catered meal, several glasses of champagne, and almost an entire day of celebrating love -- most wedding guests are too full to enjoy a slice of wedding cake. However, sending each guest home with a slice of cake in a cute commemorative box is a great way to thank them for their presence. What better way to customize the commemorative boxes, than decorating them yourself?
Things You'll Need
- 2 square pieces of card stock
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Tape
- Food-safe cellophane (optional)
- Non-toxic paint (optional)
- Glue gun
- Colored paper (optional)
- Glitter (optional)
- Stickers (optional)
- Photographs.
- Other decorative items
Instructions
-
-
1
Fold the smaller piece of card stock in half, along the diagonal. Open it up and fold it along the other diagonal.
-
2
Fold each of the paper's four corners in, so they touch the center. This is marked by the intersection of the two creases from Step 1.
-
-
3
Fold one edge of the newly created square in -- so it touches the center line -- then fold in the other edge, so the paper looks like a cupboard door.
-
4
Unfold the entire thing, to reveal folds that look like a grid. Trace around the four squares surrounding the center of the paper.
-
5
Make four cuts in the card stock. Lead from each corner of the center square to the edge of the paper, at a 90 degree angle to the edges of the square. The cuts should resemble a capital H -- with the center square serving as the crossbar.
-
6
Fold one of the larger flaps up at a 90 degree angle to the center square. That center square is now the bottom of the box. Fold the top of the flap down -- pushing the corner down and onto the bottom of the box -- then fold its sides in around the bottom. Repeat with the other large flap.
-
7
Fold one of the smaller flaps up, and push its corner down to the bottom of the box, around the sides of the larger flaps. Repeat with the other small flap. Optionally, reinforce the bottom and/or sides of the box with tape.
-
8
Repeat Steps 1 through 7 with the larger piece of card stock to create a lid for the box.
-
9
Paint each box a color that corresponds to the theme of your wedding, if desired.
-
10
Line each box with food-safe cellophane or tissue paper that matches the wedding color scheme, before putting the cake in.
-

Decorate the boxes. For a Las Vegas wedding, try a red box with stickers depicting dice, poker chips and roulette wheels. For something more traditional, glue tasteful silver hearts and a picture of the newlyweds to a white box. Remember to label it with the names of the couple and the wedding date.

Tips & Warnings
If you are in a hurry, you can skip making the boxes and buy plain, food-safe boxes from gift packaging retailers, as well as restaurant supply companies. Take-out boxes are ideal for this purpose, and plain enough to dress up beautifully.
Many retailers offer volume discounts.
A slightly different style of box is described in the tutorial linked in Resource 1.
Do not stick simply to the decorative suggestions listed. Anything light enough to be glued to a box is fair game.
Only buy cellophane that is labeled food safe.
