How to Install Barn Lights
Installing new barn lights can be an important task for barn owners. Given the benefits of a well-lit barn, understanding how to set up your own light fixtures can be invaluable. With the right tools, and a proper light fixture, any barn owner can maintain a well-lit barn environment. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Pencil
- Round outdoor junction box
- 3/8-inch cable clamp
- 2-head floodlight bulb holder
- Compact fluorescent floodlights
- 2-G wire
- Sheet metal screws, No. 8 by 1 inch, stainless steel
- Cordless electric drill
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers

Mark the point upon which you want to mount your barn light with a pencil, then drill a 1.5-inch hole into the mounting point with an electric drill.

Feed 2 to 6 feet of 2-G wire into the hole, shut down the power flowing to your barn and connect that wire to the junction box of an existing barn light.

Construct the junction box of your new barn light by attaching a 3/8-inch cable clamp to the the junction box, and lacing the 2-G wire through the clamp and into the box.

Screw the junction box into the mounting point with No. 8 screws and an electric drill.

Use wire strippers to remove the insulation off the length of 2-G wire that hangs out of the junction box.

Attach the baseplate of your new barn light to the junction box, then screw the bulb holders into the base plate by hand.

Lace the stripped wire through the baseplate and the bulb holders, and attach fluorescent, exterior-rated floodlights.

Restore power to your barn and turn on the lights.
