Proper Storage of Yogurt

Proper Storage of Yogurt thumbnail
Yogurt spoils without refrigeration.

Like most dairy products, yogurt has a limited shelf life. Proper storage ensures it remains flavorful and safe to eat for the longest possible time. If you purchase a lot of yogurt, store it so that the oldest containers are used first. You don't want old yogurt languishing in the back of the fridge. Both homemade and purchased yogurts have similar storage needs. While the "use-by" date on purchased yogurt is a guide, it can still spoil if you store it improperly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Leave the yogurt container sealed until you are ready to use it. Once opened, promptly replace the lid after each use or transfer it to an airtight container.

    • 2

Place the closed yogurt container in the refrigerator as soon as possible after purchase.

    • 3

Store unopened yogurt for up to one month. Store the yogurt in the refrigerator for up to two weeks after opened. Refer to the "use-by" date on the package to verify storage times.

    • 4

Freeze yogurt for up to two months for long-term storage. Frozen yogurt separates after thawing, so you must stir it to recombine the ingredients. Use thawed yogurt immediately.
