How to Paint a Galvanized Fence

How to Paint a Galvanized Fence thumbnail
Do not use a nylon paintbrush.

Galvanized fences are coated with a zinc layer that protects them from corrosion and rust. Unfortunately, this galvanized coating prevents paint adhesion. Treat the fence with an acidic primer, specifically manufactured for galvanized metal, or flaking will eventually result. Once the galvanized zinc layer is properly etched, the fence will accept paint. Apply a finish specifically made for exterior surfaces, or fading and cracking may occur. Paint the fence, using the proper application techniques, or the finish may dry flawed.

Instructions

    • 1

Trim grass from the galvanized fence, using an edger.

    • 2

Use a rough sponge to scrub the galvanized fence with a degreaser. Rinse the metal, using a pressure washer. Allow the fence to dry for two hours.

    • 3

Use dropcloths to protect cement areas running adjacent to the fence.

    • 4

Apply etching primer to a 3-foot wide area of the galvanized fence, using a roller. Use a polyester brush to smooth the wet etching primer. Brush the galvanized fence in a vertical motion, applying delicate pressure. Allow the fence to dry for three hours.

    • 5

      Wash the roller/brush with water.

    • 6

Paint the galvanized fence just as you primed it. Allow the finish to dry for three hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not use latex primer on a galvanized fence, or the finish will flake.

  • Do not finish a galvanized fence using a nylon paintbrush, or flaws will appear in the final finish.

  • Do not paint unprimed galvanized fences, or the finish will peel.
