How to Pour a Five Gallon Can of Paint

How to Pour a Five Gallon Can of Paint thumbnail
Purchase a plastic pour spout to help ease the task of pouring paint from a 5-gallon bucket.

A 5-gallon bucket of paint weighs approximately 50 pounds and pouring paint out of this container can be a tricky feat. Most of these plastic buckets are equipped with a hole on the cover, allowing the user to control the amount of paint that flows out when the bucket is tipped. For best results, however, purchase a 5-gallon paint bucket spout at your local hardware store to make pouring the paint into a smaller container more convenient. A spout can cost as little as $1.25 and can be easily cleaned after each use. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Open the pour hole on the cover of the 5-gallon paint can by screwing off the cap. Turn the cap counterclockwise to remove. Position the plastic pour spout over the opening and turn clockwise to screw on the spout.

    • 2

Position an empty 1-gallon paint or paint tray beside the 5-gallon bucket. Grasp the handle of the bucket and gently tip the bucket toward the smaller container until paint begins to flow out of the spout.

    • 3

Fill the smaller receptacle to the desired level. When finished, return the 5-gallon bucket to the upright position and wipe any paint dribbles from the side of the bucket with a paper towel or rag.

Tips & Warnings

  • As you empty more paint out of the 5-gallon bucket, it will become lighter and you will be able to lift the bucket and pour the paint into a smaller paint can or tray rather than tipping it.
