The shower handle and shower head on your bathtub may need to be replaced when you redesign the bathroom or when the handle is faulty. The shower handle you choose for your bathroom will be easier to install if it matches the plumbing of your old handle. The most common handle type fits on to a cartridge that controls the waterflow from the shower head. Repairing a single-handle shower with a cartridge takes about an hour. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Pocket knife
  • Phillip's head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Allen wrench
  • Replacement handle

Instructions

    • 1

      Turn off the water to the bathroom by shutting off the water main valve of the home.

      Remove the cover of the shower handle, using a pocket knife or the end of your flat-head screwdriver.

      Remove the screw from the shower handle, using a Phillip's head screwdriver and pull it off. If there is no cover to the handle, locate a small hole on the underside or side of the handle to find the Allen screw holding it in place. Remove the Allen screw with an Allen wrench.

      Remove the screw holding the shower handle cover in place. Slide on the new cover and screw it down.

    • 5

      Align the new shower handle over the cartridge and slide it in place. Insert the screw and tighten it down. Replace the cover if necessary.
