How to Design a Book Cover for Science

How to Design a Book Cover for Science thumbnail
Cover a science book with a large piece of paper such as brown packaging paper to protect the cover.

The main reason teachers assign the task of covering a science textbook is to help protect the cover of the textbook. The second reason is to afford the students an opportunity to personalize the cover and make it easy to identify. Personalization includes writing or printing the word "Science" on the cover, science symbols and science equations. Large pieces of paper such as brown packaging paper, brown paper sacks, butcher paper, parchment paper, newspaper and wrapping paper work for making a Science book cover.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the book with brown packaging paper. Cut a piece of brown packaging paper 18-by-36 inches. Lay the paper on a table so it is 18 inches tall. Center the Science book on the paper. Draw along the top and bottom edge of the book. Remove the book and fold the top edge down and the bottom edge up on the drawn line.

    • 2

Place the science book on the folded paper lining up the top and bottom edges. Place the right edge of the book 2 inches in from the right hand side of the packaging paper. Open the book at the last page. Fold the right edge of the paper inside the back cover flush with the book edge. Close the book. Flip the book over and repeat the process with the front cover. Cut off any excess paper.

    • 3

Tape the top and bottom corners of the paper book cover to the top folded edge to create pockets to hold the front and back cover.

    • 4

Decorate the front cover, spine and back of the book. Write "Science" on the spine. Draw science symbols, nature pictures and/or science equations on the front and back of the cover. Optional: Color the designs with markers or colored pencils.

Tips & Warnings

  • Substitute any type of paper that is large enough to cover the Science book. Use the same process to make the cover. Add any desired words and designs.
