How to Shine Black Dress Shoes
Gentleman, imagine getting into that designer five-piece tie and tails for that fancy black tie wedding or special event that you attending. Everything looks perfect, except for your dull black shoes. Your un-shined black shoes simply won't go well with a dressed up look. Take the time to polish your shes before the big event. You can do a simple polish job with a polishing rag, but for the ultimate shine, additional brushes, polishes and patience are needed. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Black shoe polish
- Welt brush
- Polish brush
- Horsehair brush
- Sole-edge dressing
- Cotton pads or balls
- Lint-free cloth

Spread an old towel or newspaper down on the area where you will be shining your shoes.

Remove any loose dirt and dust off of your shoes by wiping them down with a damp rag. Use the welt brush to scrub out any dirt from the welt strip, which is the seam where the upper part of the shoe is joined with the sole. Let the shoes dry completely before you proceed.

Apply sole-edge dressing carefully to the exposed sole around the shoe if you feel it is necessary for extra shine. Be very careful not to get any of the sole-edge dressing on the rest of the shoe, as it will stain permanently. Allow the dressing to dry completely before continuing.

Apply black shoe polish to the shoes in a circular motion using a shoe polish brush. Rub the polish vigorously all over the shoe, making sure you are covering every area of the shoe. Allow the polish to dry for about five to 15 minutes.

Brush the shoes vigorously all over with a horsehair shine brush; this helps to remove any excess polish.

Apply additional polish to the toe and heel areas of the shoe if you would like extra shine. Take a damp cotton ball or pad and dip it into the shoe polish. Apply the shoe polish with the cotton balloon the toe and the heel area in a circular rubbing motion. Use a new damp cotton ball dipped in shoe polish for each application until you reach your desired level of shine. Allow the shoes to dry completely before you wear them.

Tips & Warnings
You can also use a lint-free cloth to buff the toe instead of cotton balls or pads.
