How to Recode a Key Lock
Programmable key locks are generally keyless locks placed on garage doors, exterior doors and safes. Instead of using a toothed key, these security devices are typically electrically powered by direct wiring or through battery power. Programmable key locks use a keypad to input a unique key combination to gain access or to secure the lock. To recode or reprogram a programmable key lock, you will need some proprietary information. Identify the programmable key lock's manufacturer. Look for the manufacturer's name on the lock and for a model number. Phone the manufacturer or visit its website to find your particular model.

Order a copy of the user's manual or owner's manual through the manufacturer. Some manufacturers offer downloadable PDF versions of their manuals.

Read the owner's manual or user's manual for specific instructions on how to recode the manufacturer's proprietary system. Generally, you will have to reset the lock back to the manufacturer's settings and create a unique entry code by following the programing instructions written in the owner's manual.

Test the key lock. Once reprogrammed, input your new entry number, leaving the door open. Try the key code at least twice to see if the recoding worked.
