How to Use a Decorating Bag without a Coupler

Decorating bags hold frosting and a decorating tip, allowing you to pipe designs on cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Couplers refer to two-part devices that lock the decorating tip in place, allowing you to switch the bag's decorating tips while the bag holds frosting. Couplers are convenient, but they aren't necessary. If you don't use couplers, you'll need to use a separate decorating bag for each decorating tip. Instructions

      Cut about 1/4 inch off the tip of the decorating bag. Slide the decorating tip down into the tip of the bag, so the end of the decorating tip protrudes from the bag. If the opening in the bag is too small, remove the decorating tip and cut the opening slightly wider before sliding the decorating tip back in place.

      Hold the bottom of the decorating bag with one hand. Use your other hand to fold down the top of the bag to create a wide, bowl-like shape.

      Fill the folded bag with about 1/2 cup of frosting, using a spatula (a spoon works, too.) Don't put too much frosting in the bag. Unfold the bag and twist it closed, forcing the frosting down towards the tip.

      Squeeze the top or middle of the bag to force the frosting through the tip. Don't squeeze from the bottom of the bag because this will cause the frosting to come out the top of the decorating bag. For best results, practice your design on a piece of waxed paper or a plate before piping a design on a cake.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use reusable decorating bags, you won't be able to use the same bags with couplers and with decorating tips only because couplers require you to cut a wider opening at the tip of the bag.
