How to Unlock a Wii Without Mod Chips
Unlocking a Nintendo Wii console refers to a process that installs the "Homebrew Channel" and allows the console to run unofficial software. Once unlocked, the Wii can run emulators, play DVDs, run programs from the SD card or external USB drives, and play backups of your existing Wii games. This can be done without the need for hardware modifications, such as installing a mod chip, and once the Homebrew Channel is running, a host of other community-made games and applications can easily be installed.

1
Download "Bannerbomb" and "BootMii Installer" from the Resources and unzip the files to your computer.

Place the "Bannerbomb" contents and the "installer.elf" file from "Hackmii" onto the SD card. Rename "installer.elf" to "boot.elf."

Tips & Warnings
Lots of homebrew games and applications for the "Homebrew Channel" can be found at "www.wiibrew.org."
Do not pay for the software required to unlock the Wii. There are a lot of websites selling the required applications, despite them being free to download as of 2010.
Do not allow the Wii to automatically update itself, as this could potentially cause problems with the unlocked firmware.
