How to Clean the Roof of Your Golf Cart

How to Clean the Roof of Your Golf Cart thumbnail
Keeping the roof of your golf cart clean helps it last longer and look new.

People drive golf carts at more places than just golf courses. Resorts and campgrounds use golf carts to transport guests, as do maintenance workers in various industries to complete their tasks. Individuals also use golf carts for short drives around the neighborhood or to shop close to home. Golf carts can be costly, so an owner should maintain his cart to help it last longer. Cleaning a golf cart on a regular basis protects the fiberglass and interior. Often overlooked, the roof of a golf cart needs attention as well.

  • 2 plastic buckets
  • Car wash soap
  • Water
  • 2 soft rags
  • Cotton towel
  • Chamois

Instructions

    • 1

Park the golf cart in a shady area. Remove equipment from the cart that could get damaged if wet.

    • 2

Fill one bucket with a mixture of car wash soap and water (see the soap bottle label for the appropriate ratio of soap to water), and a second bucket with water only. Dip a soft rag into the soap-and-water bucket, ring out excess water, and wipe the top of the golf cart roof in a circular motion. Dip another rag into the water-only bucket, ring out any excess water and wipe the soapy solution off the roof. Dry off the roof with a soft cotton towel or chamois. Wipe off any areas that dripped down from the roof. Allow the roof to dry.

    • 3

Spray (if needed) an all-surface golf cart cleaner over the roof area (see Resources). Allow the cleaner to set and foam for about 10 to 15 minutes.

    • 4

Wipe the area with a rag dipped in the water-only bucket. Dry off with a towel or chamois.

    • 5

Spray fiberglass cleaner from about 8 inches on areas of the roof that show black scuff marks, scrapes or stains. After about one minute of sitting, wipe off the sprayed area with a soft cotton cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a cover for your golf cart to protect the roof and body.

  • Use a leaf blower on a regular basis to blow dust off of the golf cart roof.

  • Avoid rinsing your cart with a garden hose. The running water could damage electronic components.
