Everyone wants to pick a dress that's both flattering and stylish for prom. After all, it'll be memorialized in photos and memories for years to come. While there are many factors to consider when choosing a prom dress, the color of your dress is just as important as the cut, style and length. There are several techniques with which to approach choosing the color of your prom dress, including complexion, accessories, comfort and overall look.

Factors to Consider
-
1
Decide what "look" or message you want your prom get-up to send. The world is your oyster as far as looks go -- you can go trendy, classic, modern, glamorous or demure. The possibilities are endless. Channel the 1920s with a gold, fringed flapper-inspired dress or go for a Mad Men-inspired Betty Draper tea-length dress with a cinched waist and full skirt. You could look to old Hollywood glamour with a slinky, glittery dress and gloves or try a classic sweetheart-cut strapless dress. Look to runway photos of celebrities at awards shows and parties for inspiration.

2
Consider accessories. What do you already have in the way of gloves, an evening wrap, barrettes, a headband, a purse or shoes? If you plan to use any accessories you already have, are they gold or silver? You will more than likely want to make your dress color decision based on a gold or silver color theme. Rhinestones and glittery dresses typically lean toward a silver color scheme, which works best with cool-colored dresses like blue, green, teal, orchid, champagne, pastels and white. Gold-focused color schemes pair best with warm colors like red, yellow, rust, caramel and black.

3
Decide on a color based on what you feel most comfortable in. After trying on a number of dresses, you ultimately need to choose which one makes you feel the most fabulous. Prom is about feeling pretty and having fun -- if you can't do both in your dress, then it's not the dress for you. Choose for comfort, ability to dance and most importantly, choose a dress that you're excited about. If that means neon orange sparkles, then go for it!
Choose Based on Your Complexion
-
4
Look at your skin, hair and eyes. Do you have a winter, summer, fall or spring complextion? Winter complexions are either olivey in skin tone or very pale. They have blue or pink undertones with eyes and hair color that contrast their skin. They look best in deep, rich colors or or chilly, cool pastels or bright white.
-
5
Summer complexions are similar to winter complexions in that they are often pale, and undertones are baby blue or pale pink. Only the hair and eyes typically match their skin. Try muted tones like soft neutrals, soft white, lavender or powder blue.
-
6
Spring complexions are typically yellow in undertone, with freckles, light eyes and lighter hair color. They look best in soft colors that are rich, in either warm or cool colors. White is best avoided, opt for an off-white color instead.
-
7
Fall complexions have golden or brown undertones with rich, darkly colored hair. They look best in rich neutrals and colors that match the rich color scheme of fall trees.

Tips & Warnings
Don't shy away from a look just because your friends don't like it. Years from now you'll look back at photos and love that you stuck out from the crowd.
