1
Ask yourself what you want to focus on. Is it the front of the house or perhaps the whole of the property? Determine where you would position the cameras. Do you want a camera that focuses on just one spot, say the front door, or do you want one that provides a wider angle so that you can see a larger area?

2
Choose the cameras that will provide the picture quality that you want remembering that a higher resolution will give you a better picture.

3
Buy the cameras that are right for your needs. Bear in mind that it is not just the camera that you will need but the screens and the software to monitor them with. A security camera dealer will be able to supply everything that you need, but if you are buying from a DIY store make a list and check that you buy everything that you are going to need.

4
Install the cameras in your chosen positions following the instructions that came with them. Wireless models are easier to mount. You may want to hire a qualified electrician to do the installation on a wired camera unless you are confident with the electrical procedure.

5
Set up a method of monitoring the cameras. If you plan to do the monitoring yourself, who will do it while you are away on vacation? You might want to consider having the camera signals relayed to a professional monitoring service.
