How to Cut Medium-Density Particle Board

Particle board--as suggested by its name--is made from a combination of sawdust, wood shavings and smaller pieces of wood pressed together and mixed with glue to form a cohesive plank of wood. This type of wood is typically fairly inexpensive and not usually used in high-quality work because of its appearance. It is, however, usable for inexpensive projects, or projects where you don't care about appearance. Of course, before using it, you must know how to cut it properly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Set your sawhorses up so that they are near enough to each other to allow both to support your particle board.

    • 2

Lay your sheet of particle board across your sawhorses.

    • 3

Mark out where you wish to cut on the particle board, using your measuring tape and straight edge.

    • 4

Line up your circular saw's blade with the markings on the edge of the particle board. You may need to adjust the depth of the blade so that it will cut all the way through the particle board, depending on the board's thickness.

    • 5

Turn on your saw -- the blade must not be touching the wood -- and guide it into the wood. Cut in a straight line and do not try to twist the saw blade against the wood while you are cutting.

    • 6

Repeat this process until you have finished all the desired cuts.

Tips & Warnings

  • For the best quality cuts, consider equipping your circular saw with a triple-chip saw blade, as this type of blade will minimize the fracture of the wood as you cut.
