How to Deter Coyotes in My Suburban Backyard

How to Deter Coyotes in My Suburban Backyard thumbnail
Coyotes can spread diseases and attack pets and children.

In a suburban setting, coyotes have no natural predators, and trapping and removing them is difficult. The best way of avoiding conflict is keeping them out of your yard. Coyotes feed on rodents, voles, garbage and occasionally pets. They can also carry fleas, ticks and other parasites, as well as diseases such as rabies and distemper. You can keep them out of your back yard by taking some precautions to avoid attracting them, and steps to prevent their entry. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Secure garbage and bird seed in sealed metal garbage cans. Coyotes feed on garbage and rodents that are attracted by garbage and seed.

    • 2

Clean up spilled seed from under bird feeders to avoid attracting rodents, and use squirrel-proof bird feeders. Coyotes feed on squirrels when other food sources dry up.

    • 3

Feed your pets inside. If pets must be fed outside, remove any leftover food immediately after the pets are done eating.

    • 4

Do not leave children or small pets such as rabbits, cats and small dogs outside alone without someone watching them.

    • 5

Install a fence at least 4 feet in height to keep coyotes from entering your yard. Coyotes are capable diggers, so the fence should also extend underground. An electric fence can also keep them out.
