Through research and actual exposure to the advertising world, you can determine if an advertising career is for you. First, however, it is important to realize that many types of advertising careers are available. You can become a writer, graphic designer, manager, sales representative and more, with advertising agencies as well as corporations in numerous industries. Most corporations hire advertising personnel at the entry or executive level. You can also start your own advertising business if you want to be an entrepreneur.

Visit the Bureau of Labor Statistics website at BLS.gov. Search for various career job descriptions in which you are interested. Enter "Copywriter Job Description" in the search area of the BLS website, for example. Read the various qualifications for certain job titles. Check to see if you have the required education. See how your job skills compare to the listed positions.

Read books on advertising careers. Also check out titles on freelance copywriting careers, if you are interested in starting your own business.

Call people in the advertising profession. Ask if you can spend part of the day observing what they do. Ask questions as opportunities arise. Listen to advertising sales reps calling customers if you are interested in selling advertising for publishing companies. Observe as many types of advertising professionals as you can, then decide if one type of advertising career most interests you.

Apply for an internship or part-time position in advertising, according to Monster.com. Spend several months working in the area of advertising that most interests you. Work on as many projects as possible. Get a feel for what the advertising field entails, including the associated frustrations. Try to get on full-time with your company if you wish to pursue a career.
