How to Install Ukulele Strings
If you are interested in playing the ukulele one of the first things to learn is how to install new strings on it. Installing new strings takes about ten minutes. The strings are first attached to the bridge of the ukulele and then attached to the tuning pegs. Two types of bridges are used on ukuleles, standard bridges and tie-knot bridges. The strings are attached differently to two bridges. Ukuleles also use two types of headstocks, regular heads and slotted heads. The slotted head is similar to a classical guitar.

1
Connect the ukulele string to the bridge. Begin with the G string. Tie a knot on the end of the string if your ukulele has a tie-knot bridge. Place the knot in the gap on the back side of the bridge and pull it taut.
-
2
Insert the string in the hole on the front side of the bridge, for a standard bridge. Push the string through the bridge until it comes out the hole in the rear of the bridge. Fold the string over the bridge and wrap it under and over itself two times. Pull it to make it taut.

Pull the string towards the headstock. Place the string in the gap in the nut. Insert the string into the hole in the tuning peg. The G string tuning peg is the left side of the headstock closest to the nut. Hold the string close to the tuning peg. Turn tuning peg counterclockwise several times until the string is tightly wound around the tuning peg. Repeat the process for the third, second and first strings.

4
Tune the ukulele to standard tuning with a an acoustic instrument tuner. Standard tuning is G-C-E-A.
-
5
Clip the excess from each of the strings with wire clippers. Place the wire clippers on the string near the tuning peg. Clipping the string near the tuning pegs makes everything neat and tidy.
-
6
Check the tuning again. Clipping the strings sometimes causes the strings to go slightly out of tune.
