How to Use a Smart Board in the Computer Classroom

A SMART Board installed in the computer classroom is used as a multimedia resource. Connect a SMART Board to a computer to display a virtual desktop. Students and teachers can interact directly on the SMART Board by touch or by using a digital light pen to operate the computer from the board screen. Save displays on the Smart Board as an image, which you may print or email. Interactive SMART Boards connect to a main computer via a USB connection. Other computers and laptops can connect to the main computer via a wireless network.

Control the display on individual student computer workstations from the SMART Board. Teachers can control a multimedia presentation using their finger or a digital pen for touch control on the SMART Board. Demonstrate computer skills, such as opening or creating documents, saving and moving files and running programs in real time for the entire class. The teacher's actions on the SMART Board are displayed on the student computer workstations in real time by using the shared-control option. Students can also interact with the SMART Board directly from their computers.

Incorporate streaming educational videos from the Internet or school intranet. Use media-playing software to display instructional media on a SMART Board connected to a computer with Internet (or intranet) access. Teachers can pause the video and write directly on the SMART Board display to highlight important information or to annotate the presentation. Annotated screens can be saved to the computer and printed for use as handouts. DVDs played in a computer can also be displayed on a SMART Board, paused and annotated.

Save SMART Board screen displays to create workbooks and instruction manuals for students. Save SMART Board screens to a computer disk or CD-ROM to create reference materials for students learning how to use a computer. Create PowerPoint presentations or print hard copies of computer screens so that students can review what they have learned.
