How to Learn How to Write on a Keyboard

Learning how to write on a keyboard will make your typing faster and less error-prone.

Learning how to write on a keyboard takes some time and effort, but once you learn, you will type much faster and more efficiently than by using the "hunt and peck" method. Knowing how to place your hands correctly and memorizing the location of letters on the keyboard enables you to write with few errors, and without ever looking down at the keyboard. That makes it an invaluable skill for everyone from secretaries to web developers. A variety of software programs offer typing tutorials to help you master the skill, but all you really need is practice.

Instructions

  1. Learn to Type

    • 1

Place your left index finger on the F key and your right index finger on the J key. These two keys each have a bump or ridge on top, so you'll know your fingers are in the right place without looking.

    • 2

Rest your other left-hand fingers on A, S, and D. Rest your other right-hand fingers on K, L and ;. These are known as the home keys, and your fingers should rest here when you're not actively typing other letters.

    • 3

Rest both your thumbs on the space bar. You can use either thumb to space between words--whichever feels most comfortable.

    • 4

Use your left index finger to hit the G key and your right index finger to hit the H key.

    • 5

Reach up with your left fingers for Q, W, E, R, and T. Reach up with your right fingers for Y, U, I, O, and P.

    • 6

Reach down with your left fingers for Z, X, C, V and B. Reach down with your right fingers for N, M, the comma, and the period. Use your right pinkie to hit the "Enter" key.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice makes perfect. Typing correctly feels awkward at first, so you'll have to force yourself to keep your fingers over the home keys. It gets easier in time.

  • All American keyboards have the same layout, so your typing technique will be identical from keyboard to keyboard. However, some ergonomic keyboards will require getting used to if you've learned on a flat keyboard. And some European keyboards have a different letter layout altogether.
