How to Cheaply Make Homemade Scented Candles
Warm scents of vanilla and cinnamon or light smells of lilac potpourri complemented by the flickering light of a candle immediately create ambiance in a room. But why spend money on expensive store-bought scented candles when you can create and personalize your own homemade ones to keep or give as gifts to friends.
Things You'll Need
- 2 to 5 tablespoons Stearin
- 1 pound Paraffin wax
- Wicks
- Fragrance oils or essential oils
- Wax color chips or crayons (optional)
- Double broiler
- Thermometer
- Glass canning jars
- Pencil
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut wick to be slightly longer than the length of the jar.
-
2
Heat the double broiler on a stove top and pour in 2 to 5 tablespoons of stearin.
-
-
3
Melt the stearin completely.
-
4
Add colored wax chips or crayons to create a colored candle.
-
5
Add 1 pound of paraffin wax to the double broiler.
-
6
Stir to evenly distribute the color throughout the candle. Use the thermometer to measure the temperature of the wax. Paraffin melts between 104 to 106 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
7
Add three to five drops of either essential oils or fragrance oils to the wax mixture and stir.
-
8
Place wick in the center of the jar with the bottom of the wick touching the bottom of the jar.
-
9
Pour a small amount of wax into the bottom of the jar to secure the wick.
-
10
Wrap the top of the wick around a pencil to keep the wick straight while the candle sets.
-
11
Pour wax mixture into the glass jar. Ensure that the temperature of the mixture does not exceed 160 to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, since glass canning jars are not made to handle temperatures higher than this.
-
12
Unravel and trim the end of the wick after the wax has completely cooled in the glass jar. The wick should be at least 1 inch longer than the height of the candle.
