How to Make All Leather Cord Necklaces for Ancient Druids thumbnail
Celtic jewelry was often made from leather.

Ancient Druids were among the most educated Celts, according to Druid Network. They studied the earth and sky to discover celestial movements and how they affected the earth. Druids developed belief systems involving earth energies and studied herbal medicine. They kept an oral history of their people and spend decades learning lore. Modern Druids can celebrate energetic connectivity by wearing leather necklaces similar to those of the ancient Celtic priests. The weaving methods pulled many leather strands together, creating an interwoven pattern similar to that of Celtic knots.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three lengths of leather cord about three times longer than you want your necklace to be. If you want a choker about 10 inches long, cut three 30 inch lengths of cord.

    • 2

Gather the cords together and fold them in half. Twist a twist tie around the centers of the cords. Lay the cords on a table with the loose ends pointing toward you and the twist tie furthest away from you. You should count six cord ends. They are 1 to 6 from left to right.

    • 3

Bring cord 1 over cords 2 and 3. Lay it next to cord 4. Bring cord 6 over cords 4 and 5. Cross cord 6 over cord 1.

    • 4

Bring cord 2 to the center. Weave cord 2 over cord 6 and under cord 1. Bring cord 5 to the center. Weave cord 5 over cord 1 and under cord 6. Repeat with cords 2 and 4.

    • 5

Weave the cords to the center until you reach the last inch of the cords. Knot the ends together and remove the twist tie from the loop at the top of the necklace. Slip the knot through the loop to secure the necklace while you wear it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make a very long cord to hold a sacred pendant or charm. You may also add beads or charms to the strands as you bring them to the center. Shells, metal votive charms, glass beads and wooden beads are all appropriate.
