How to Build a Nautical Flag Pole

How to Build a Nautical Flag Pole thumbnail
You can build a nautical flag pole out of PVC pipe.

Nautical flag poles are used to fly flags or banners that can identify the country where the ship is registered. On larger ships, both commercial and military, there may be other flags, banners or standards that will communicate information about the vessel to passing ships. For most pleasure craft, nautical flag poles will fly either the national flag or a banner from a yacht or boating club that the owners belong to.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 to 6 feet length of 1 inch PVC piping
  • Two half-inch eye screws
  • One 1-inch PVC "T" connector
  • 8 to 12 feet length of white nylon rope

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the length you want your flag pole to be, and cut a 1 inch diameter white PVC piping to that length.

    • 2

Measure one to two inches from the top of the PVC piping and drill a small hole into the piping. Insert a "Eye screw" into this hole and run a bead of contact cement around the screw inside the piping to secure the screw in place.

    • 3

Place one PVC cap onto the top of the pole. Before you attach the cap, use a small amount of PVC glue and apply it to the top of pole.

    • 4

Drill a second small hole on the same side as the first hole, but three to four inches from the bottom of the pole. Insert and glue an "Eye screw" the same way you did in step two.

    • 5

Run a piece of white nylon rope through each "Eye screw" and tie the rope off.

    • 6

Attach a 1=-nch PVC "T" connector to your boat and angle the connector so the flag pole will be at the same angle.

    • 7

Insert your PVC flagpole into the "T" connector and your nautical flag pole is ready to be used.
