How to Mount Rattlesnake Skins

A rattlesnake skin must be properly prepared before mounting for display.

Mounting a rattlesnake skin on a board is a good way to display it. Regardless of whether you found the rattlesnake already dead or killed it yourself, it is important that it is prepared before being mounted correctly otherwise the skin could start to decompose. A decomposing rattlesnake skin could result in a foul smelling room or a bug infestation, which would pose as a hygiene hazard.

Things You'll Need

• Scalpel
• Green antifreeze
• Hide tanning solution
• Gloves
• Staple gun

Instructions

1. Cut the rattlesnake down its length along its underside using the scalpel. Gloves are advised to be worn during this process.

2. Place the skin on a flat surface and begin removing the flesh. This can be done using the scalpel or a spoon.

3. Use the blunt side of the scalpel to remove the tissue that is still stuck onto the skin. It is best to scrape off the tissue starting from the side of the head down toward the tail to minimize the damage done to the scales on the other side.

4. Staple the sides of the skin to the wooden board that it will be mounted on without over-stretching it.

5. Apply the hide tanning solution or alternatively green antifreeze to the side of the skin that you scraped the flesh off. Leave it to dry and apply another layer. Make sure the entire skin is covered.
