How to Crank a Diesel Mercedes

How to Crank a Diesel Mercedes thumbnail
Mercedes-Benz produced its first vehicles under their current brand name in 1926.

Diesel Mercedes vehicles are well-known for their fuel efficiency and longevity, making them valuable vehicles for both collectors and diesel fans. Starting a diesel Mercedes is a relatively simple task. The only difference is that owners are required to wait for the glow plug to pre-warm the cylinders before cranking the vehicle; otherwise the cranking process may be unsuccessful. Diesel Mercedes vehicles require diesel fuel in order to operate.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and enter the Mercedes. Insert the key into the ignition cylinder and turn the key to the "ON" position.

    • 2

Wait for the glow plug indicator on the instrument panel to go out. The glow plugs help pre-heat the cylinders prior to starting the engine. When the glow plug indicator is no longer present, turn the key to the "START" position and crank the Mercedes.

    • 3

Release the key and allow it to fall back to the "ON" position. Repeat the process if the Mercedes does not crank the first time. To turn the Mercedes off, turn the key to the "OFF" position and remove it from the ignition cylinder.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your diesel Mercedes won't crank the first time, depress the throttle slightly while cranking. In cold weather, allow the glow plugs to come on a few times or use a block heater to warm the engine before cranking.

  • Never crank the engine for more than 20 seconds at a time. Extended cranking can cause the starter to overheat and eventually fail.
