How to Make Cutlery Holders From Terra Cotta Pots thumbnail
Terra cotta pots can help organize your kitchen.

Every home has at least one drawer full of cutlery and kitchen utensils, but very few of these are used on a daily basis. While cooking, you may have to spend several minutes searching through your utensil drawer to find exactly what you're looking for. Save time by keeping your daily cutlery and frequently used utensils in a decorative terra cotta holder.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover your work area with several layers of newspaper to prevent paint and sealant from damaging the surface.

    • 2

Place the clay pot upside down on the work area and spray with two to three coats of enamel paint. Let dry thoroughly between coats. For terra cotta pots that already have a decorative design, you may wish to use concrete sealer instead of paint on the outside to keep the natural clay coloration. The sealer will give it a wet look.

    • 3

Coat the inside of the pot with one or two coats of concrete sealer. This is optional. Let dry thoroughly between coats. Another option would be to use a dark-colored paint on the inside.

    • 4

Add decorative touches to the outside of the cutlery holder with stencils, decals or freehand painting. Let your imagination run wild to make this your personal creation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use new pots that are clean and thoroughly dry for the best paint adhesion.

  • Use deeper pots to hold long-handled kitchen utensils.

  • Acrylic paints can be used instead of enamel if you prefer.

  • Only use spray paints outside or in well-ventilated areas. Avoid breathing the fumes.
