Instructions

    • 1

Designate your work surface. Whether it's a workbench, desk, sewing table or easel, it's the central and most important component of your craft area. If you use a chair or stool, have one that's comfortable enough for you to spend as much time there as you like.

    • 2

Place storage components within reach of your work surface. Having your tools at arm's length is more efficient than getting up to rummage around in boxes for them. Storage furnishings can be open bookshelves, a dresser or an armoire. And don't forget to use the walls as places to store and display your supplies. A peg board with hooks keeps tools at the ready and open wall shelves come in many sizes to meet different needs. Items that are used most often can be displayed on open shelves and in baskets and jars and those used only occasionally can be kept in drawers or file boxes.

    • 3

Accessorize your craft area according to the time of day that you use it and what you do there. If you like to sip a cup of coffee while you work, put an electric coffee maker in your craft area.. A music source such as a radio or MP3 player docking station, inspiring photos and artwork, a plaque or banner with your favorite inspirational quote and even a scented candle can provide multisensory inspiration.

    • 4

Remove items not related to your craft projects from the area. Keep this area free from other work and responsibilities, such as paying bills, homework and grocery lists. Maintaining an area that's only for making art and crafts prevents it from getting cluttered, keeping it your own creative haven.
