How to Get in the HUD Program

The federal government established the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 1965. Its mission is to provide quality and affordable housing in communities free from discrimination. HUD works to create a strong housing market and improve the economy. It also provides consumer protection assistance. Thus, the low-income receive access to programs offering help to rent or buy a home or to avoid foreclosure. HUD offers an array of online information on how to participate in these programs.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet with a HUD-sponsored counseling agency that provides advice at low or no cost on how to rent or buy a home (see Resources). Counseling is also available for reverse mortgage and foreclosure avoidance.

    • 2

Contact your local Public Housing Agency (PHA) to complete an application for public housing assistance (see Resources). Either you or the PHA representative will complete an application that is used to determine your eligibility. You can contact your local HUD office for assistance if you have trouble in contacting your local PHA.

    • 3

Apply at an approved lender for a HUD-insured property improvement loan if you are a property owner. Property improvement must meet requirements. Visit the HUD website to obtain a list of approved lenders.

    • 4

Contact your local PHA to apply to participate in the housing choice voucher program if you are a renter. The participant finds a suitable housing unit where the owner is willing to rent under the HUD program.
