How to Grill Using Skewers
Skewers are cooking utensils made of either wood or metal that you use to grill a variety of foods, such as meats, vegetables or fruits. Slide chunks of food onto the long, sharp utensil and cook it on your grill for a simple way to prepare meals for your family or a party. Skewers are particularly useful when you are grilling small items like shrimp and scallops that can easily slip through the grates of a grill. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Select the foods you want to grill and cut them into 1- to 2-inch cubes. Trim excess fats from the meats you choose and leave the rind on vegetables -- like tomatoes and eggplant -- because they will help prevent the vegetable from falling apart when they are cooking.
-
2
Use wooden or metal skewers. Metal skewers are reusable and can be cost-effective over time. However, if you are throwing a party, wooden skewers make more sense so that your guests don't have to worry about returning them to the kitchen. If you choose wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes before you grill, so that they don't burn.

Slide food onto the skewers through the centers of the cubes. Many people place different meats and vegetables on the same skewers, but that is not a good idea because different foods have different cooking times. Place chicken chunks together on one skewer, group steak on another skewer, slide shrimp onto their own skewers and bunch vegetables on their own skewers to ensure that each food is cooked for the proper amount of time.
-
4
Position skewers on a grill that you have sprayed with a nonstick cooking spray. Rotate the skewers every few minutes, depending on the cooking time of the food you are grilling, until all sides have been in contact with the grill and the food is done.
-
5
Use tongs to remove the food from the grill because the skewers will be very hot.
