How to Make a Homemade Christmas Hamper
One struggle when buying Christmas hampers or gift baskets is that there are always a few items included that the receiver might not enjoy. By creating your own Christmas hamper or basket, you can personalize the basket with treats you know the receiver will love and appreciate. Donna Hammer, author of "101 Gift Basket Ideas," explains that by building your own Christmas hamper or gift basket, you can "tailor your basket to the theme, person or type of function you are attending." Making your own hamper or basket is an easy way to make your holiday gift memorable.
Things You'll Need
- Container (hamper, box or basket)
- Decorative shredded filler
- Newsprint
- Holiday ribbon

1
Place the container on a sturdy surface. Crumple the newsprint and place in the container, filling it 3/4 of the way to the top. This will act as a base for your items. Cover the newsprint with the decorative shredded filler.
-
2
Select your largest item (likely the bottle of wine or other beverage) and place it in the center of the container on top of the decorative shredded filler. This item will anchor all the other items.

Organize your packaged foods and gifts by size, from largest to smallest. Beginning with the larger items, place them around the bottle of wine. Continue fitting the items in and around the central item until all items are in the container. Position the items so as many as possible are visible.
If necessary, use packing or cellophane tape to secure items to one another. Affix it to the backs of the items to keep it out of sight.

4
Tie the holiday ribbon in a festive bow on to the container. Your gift is ready to be hand-delivered.

Tips & Warnings
Choose a theme, such as wine and cheese, desserts, party celebration, spa or gardening. Sneak in some "favorites" of the gift recipient.
Martha Stewart recommends selecting containers or baskets that the recipient can use again. Consider matching your container to the recipient's home or office decor, or putting your items in a non-basket container, like a reusable storage bin.
