How to Copy Music from Your Portable Device onto Your Computer

Copying music from a portable device such as an iPod or an MP3 player to a computer is usually a fairly simple task that involves booting up the correct file transfer software, connecting the device to the computer via a USB hub and identifying which songs to transfer. Depending on how many songs you are moving from one device to another, it could take as little as 10 minutes or up to half an hour.

• Portable music device transfer software
• USB cable
• Portable music device

Instructions

1. Check your computer to see whether you have an application allowing you to transfer music from your device. If not, load the CD that came with your device and download the application. If you are using an iPod, you also can download iTunes software from the Apple website.

2. Open the file transfer software once it has been downloaded. Connect the portable device to your computer using the USB cable.

3. Wait for prompts from the file transfer software. Click on the responses that allow you to transfer music. If you are transferring from an iPod, click on the prompt asking you to "Synch" to device.

4. Disconnect the USB cable from the device and the computer when the file transfer is complete.
