Instructions for Pillowcase Dresses

Pillowcase dresses are perfect for little girls. You can take a pillowcase, or a small piece of fabric, and make a sundress for your little lady. The instructions are simple even for those who are not sewing experts. You can add decorations to make your little girl's pillowcase dress as fancy as you want. Much of the decoration depends on what the pillowcase looks like. Choose pillowcases of a color or print that look like they were meant for little girls to wear.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the very bottom edge of the pillowcase where it is sewn together. Cut off the amount necessary to fit your little girl.

    • 2

Fold the ends of the fabric under 1/4-inch and again another 1/4-inch to form a hem. Use pins to hold the fabric in place. Sew to secure the hem in place.

    • 3

Make armholes by laying out the pillowcase and cutting semi-circles at the very top of the pillowcase where it opens.

    • 4

Sew a seam 1/2-inch below the fold in the pillowcase to make a casing for your elastic. Be sure to do this both on the front and the back of the pillowcase.

    • 5

Cut two pieces of elastic that measure 8 inches each. Put a safety pin in either end of one piece of elastic, leaving one end free and attaching the other end to the top of the armhole of the dress. Insert the elastic through the casing using the safety pin to help feed it through.

    • 6

Stitch the ends of the elastic at the ends of the casing to hold it in place. Repeat with the other casing and other piece of elastic.

    • 7

Attach some binding to the edges of the armholes to finish them. Use pins to hold the binding in place and sew.

    • 8

Cut four pieces of binding that measure approximately 12 inches each. Sew the unfolded ends to close them up.

    • 9

Pin one length of binding to each of the corners of the front and the back of the dress to use for tying over your little girl's shoulders.

    • 10

Add any decorations you desire, such as rickrack or buttons.

Tips & Warnings

  • Embroidered pillowcases look cute when you make them into a dress. This is a way for you to use pillowcases that your grandmother took the time to embroider but that are not being used on your bed.

  • You can often find unique pillowcases in a thrift shop, making this dress extremely affordable.
