How to Make a Fairy Flower Wreath

How to Make a Fairy Flower Wreath thumbnail
Use poppies for a fairy with ladybug wings.

Fairies are very particular about their headwear. Please them with wreaths made from sturdy stems of silk flowers nestled in garlands of silk ivy. Use boughs of full-blown roses of deepest red for a dramatic older fairy who chooses to be clothed in darkness and select pink rosebuds and tiny white mums for a young fairy in a pink carnation tutu. Create a wreath from the brightest flowers in the silk garden for the fairy who spins her garments from the brightest stripes of the rainbow. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Overlap 3 inches of the ends of two stems of 20-gauge floral wire and twist them together to create one long stem. Add a third stem to the grouping in the same way.

    • 2

Fit the length of wire you created to the fairy's head, making a circlet. Cut the wire so that there is 3 inches of overlap on either end.

    • 3

Overlap the ends of the wire length by 3 inches and twist them together.

    • 4

Attach a small comb to each side of the wreath with short lengths of 28-gauge floral wire to hold the wreath in place on the wearer's head.

    • 5

Cut several long lengths of narrow ribbon and knot each length around the wire at the back of the wreath, so that they hang down the wearer's back. Tie the knot in the center of each ribbon, so that both ends hang down. Arrange the ribbons close together; when finished, they should cover about 2 inches of the wire at the back of the wreath. Vary the lengths of these ribbons.

    • 6

Cut a length of silk ivy garland to the same measurement as the wire circle. Arrange it on top of the circle and attach it to the circle with a twist of wire every inch around the circle. The garland should completely cover the wire.

    • 7

Cut the silk flowers just below the spot where a flower branches off from the stem. This "V" in the stem will hold the flower sprays in place. Use sprays of flowers or single blossoms.

    • 8

Wire the flowers to the circlet by twisting a small piece of 28-gauge floral wire around the bottom of the "V" and the circlet. Use a second piece of floral wire to attach the stem to the circlet just below each blossom. A few flowers can serve as accents to the green ivy; alternatively, attach many flowers to create a large full wreath.

Tips & Warnings

  • Glue an ornament, such as a butterfly or a bow, above the ribbon tails in the wreath's back.

  • Ensure all loose ends of wire are tucked in so that they will not scratch the wearer.

  • Make this a craft for a child's party by making the wire circles and attaching the ivy and combs in advance. Cut the flowers ahead of time and let the children add flowers with 2-inch pieces of green chenille stem. They can also tie the ribbons on the back.

  • Gently shake the finished wreath and wire down any pieces that are loose.
