Pillow Case Sewing Directions

Pillow Case Sewing Directions thumbnail
Pillow cases are a good starting project when learning to sew.

Making a pillow case is an excellent first project for a beginning sewer. There are only a few seams that must be sewn. To ensure a proper fit, appropriate lengths of fabric should be purchased depending on the size of the pillow. Two yards of 44-inch fabric should be enough to fit two standard-sized pillows, 2.25 yards should fit two queen-sized pillows, and 2.5 yards should be enough fabric for two king-sized pillows. Buy a little more fabric than needed to account for any shrinkage.

Instructions

    • 1

Prewash and dry the fabric. This will pre-shrink the fabric before sewing. Iron the fabric after drying it.

    • 2

Measure the pattern on butcher paper. Mark with the pencil two pieces, 44 inches by 36 inches for standard pillows, 44 inches by 40 inches for queen pillows, and 44 inches by 46 inches for king pillows. Cut the patterns from the paper.

    • 3

Lay the fabric flat. Situate the two pattern pieces on top of the fabric. Cut two pieces from the fabric.

    • 4

Fold one fabric piece lengthwise. Make sure both ends are flush together. Mark a half-inch in from the edge of the side and from the edge of one of the ends. Run the open side of the fabric down the half-inch mark through the sewing machine, stitching the sides together. Run one open side of the fabric down the half-inch mark through the sewing machine. Repeat with the second piece of fabric.

    • 5

Run the open end of one piece of fabric through the machine set to a zig zag stitch. Do not sew the end shut.

    • 6

Fold the open end back a half of an inch. Iron the hem.

    • 7

Fold the open end back 4 inches. Run the fabric through the machine using a straight stitch. Do not sew the open end shut.

    • 8

Turn the completed pillow case inside out. Stuff with the pillow.
